The very first Scheepjes CAL will have been 10 years ago in 2024. Scheepjes is celebrating this with no less than four new projects.  For the first time ever in a Scheepjes project, you can decide whether you want to crochet or knit all these projects! So you can go for a Crochet-A-Long (CAL) or Knit-A-Long (KAL).

The first project is part of the Dawn Chorus series, a tribute to songbirds. The Goldcrest Scarf, inspired by the beautiful colours of the goldcrest, was designed by Martin Up North and is suitable for advanced crocheters and knitters. The pattern uses a number of techniques, such as mosaic crochet and knitting, which are alternated throughout the scarf, to keep the pattern interesting. You will make the scarf with Scheepjes Metropolis, a wonderfully soft, yet strong yarn of 75% Merino Wool and 25% Nylon. In addition to the yarn, the kit also contains some nice extras.

The Scheepjes CKAL Goldcrest Scarf kit contains the following items:

  • 7 x Scheepjes Metropolis of 50 gram holding 200 metres of yarn per ball
  • 1 x notepad
  • 1 x roll of washi tape
  • 1 x set of 3 postcards

    • The crochet and knitting pattern is available for free via the Scheepjes website in Dutch, English (UK & US) and German and via the official Scheepjes Facebook groups. Of course, you will also need knitting needles or crochet hooks as well as other accessories for both versions of this project. These are not included in the kit. For the crocheted version you will need:

  • 1 x crochet hook in size 3.50mm
  • 1 x crochet hook in size 4.00mm

    • And for the knitted version, you will need:
  • 1 x set of 5 double-pointed knitting needles in size 3.00mm
  • 2 x 80cmlong circular knitting needles in size 3.00mm OR 1 x 80cm-long circular knitting needle in size 3.00mm and 1 x stitch holder
  • 1 x crochet hook in size 3.00mm
  • 4 x stitch markers

    If I didn't like Terrazzo, I was going to say it was terr-erible... BUT -- IT'S FANTASTIC. The colors are beautiful and the little nuances of extra color adds to the depth of the finished work.     A great yarn with an array of different coloured speckles throughout. Easy to knit with and it holds the shape of the garment perfectly. It creates a light fabric and I'm sure it will be a favourite to wear in the future. The only downside is a technical one - as in: I couldn't find a single online photo on different websites that accurately reflected the true colour of the yarn I actually received. Luckily I was happy with the colour anyway but I think it is something to bear in mind when ordering.

    Re the Yarn - I chose it primarily for the colour as my daughter had requested a baby pink sweater but I really cannot get to grips with it and don't like the way it knits and the lack of stitch definition, so it is currently dormant and in my stash
