Frustrating yarn

I bought this yarn because it was the only one I could find which gave the graduated colours I wanted. I'm using it to crochet a throw and am finding it extremely frustrating! The yarn doesn't appear to have been spun/twisted/whatever the term is, at all. It's like working with 6 very fine strands instead of one thicker one and I keep having to redo stitches where I've inadvertently split the yarn. The yarn isn't cheap and although the composition (wool/alpaca) is beautifully soft, I'm very disappointed with it because it splits so easily and certainly would avoid buying it in future.
